Students will be starting another additional work this week. I was pondering over whether or not to add another additional so late in the term. However my idea is that these works will be revisted again in the next term. Also, Black Earth - Fazil Say (the new additional work) again has many compositional techniques that are similar to Rush (There are also many differences). I also wanted to introduce this work because it is only one of the two non-Australian works in this mandatory topic.
I focused on influences that the composer, Say, mentions:
Jazz
Kara Toprak - Aşık Veysel (a Turkish folk tune)
The students have also not had much opportunity to explore cultural music (yes, they have heard works composed by artists who were not Australia but those works tended to learn more towards Popular music and Western Art music)
The resources for this week are quite simple and straight forward as this work will be revisted (I did not want to go too in depth) I have included:
