Notating music in the classroom is an important skill for music students to learn and achieve. It provides students with a method to write down their creative compositions (not the only method!!) whilst providing many different tools and features.

Some of these notation applications includes:

- Sibelius (the most popular and preferred application by most schools)

- MuseScore (free to download!)

- Finale

- Dorico

- Flat.io

- Noteflight

and if using an iPad:

- Staffpad

- Notate Me

Briefly touching base on Sibelius as most schools do provide this application. Apart from students, it is very useful for teachers whether they are required to arrange a piece of music for an ensemble of any size including both instrumental and choral, composing a small piece of work to set an example to students and much more. It is quite simple to use and navigate with a handy keypad in the corner which includes your basic skills such as inserting notes, rests, different rhythms etc. A wide range of instruments are included and the sounds of these instruments are also available on playback (although the sound may not be authentic, it does give a general idea). Some other features include plug-ins and importing and exporting graphics.

Grab some popcorn, open Sibelius (if you have it) and watch this video for some basic tips and tricks around Sibelius and how to use it.
