We were fortunate enough to have a past Conservatorium student, Rebecca Ly, give us a talk today about Games in the Music Classroom.

How can we adapt the structure of a game (highlighted below) into educational games in the music classroom?

Level 1: Defining a Game

  • Play

  • Game

Playing is self explanatory, it is essentially the action involved in playing e.g. kicking a ball.

The 'Game' includes goal-centric rules, for example, when playing soccer, there are certain rules you have to follow to ensure it is a fair game. This may also include

  • Role playing e.g goal keeper

  • Participation (is voluntary)

  • Rituals with special meaning (e.g. scoring a goal)

Level 2: Up a Level

This involved serious and non-voluntary aspects.

Playing Motivations:

  • Achievers

  • Socialises

  • Explorers

  • Killers

Rewards:

  • Narrative

  • Status

  • Privilege/Power

  • Non-Monetary/Non-Physical

  • Monetary/Physical
