Disruptive Technology

Although using technology and different programs can be highly effective and advantageous for students learning, there are also many disruptive technologies. Disruptive technologies is technology that makes you think and change the way you do something that is neither beneficial or helpful. The most common are social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, YouTube etc.

The increase in social media sites is also reflected in the drastic increase of technology in the past 2 decades.

In 1998-99, there was less than a 17% use of technology in the household. 10 years later in 2008-09, it has drastically increased to 75% and then increasing to 92% in 2010-11; just two years! There has also been a growth of mobile data as well as social applications. In these new programs and applications, it is important to note the legal age and terms and conditions of the page to ensure it isn't negatively impacting the children who do use the programs.

There is also a comparison being made of digital immigrants vs. digital natives.

What is your thought?

What about this?

Childhood at risk (those who are learning through fast cut educational videos)

vs.

Childhood empowerment (those who are utilising individual learning)

What are your thoughts?

Whilst I think that learning through technology can most certainly be beneficial and encourage deep individual learning, guidelines and restrictions definitely need to apply when it comes to distractions in technology, most namely, social media.
